Challenging Your Picky Eater

Few things are as frustrating to parents as dealing with a determinedly picky eater. The situation can be exacerbated during quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic as many supermarkets are still experiencing shortages of some items and limiting others. The following are some tips that will introduce youngsters to new foods and make them more well-rounded eaters.

  1. Calling a child a picky eater can actually make the situation worse and lead to other undesirable food-time behaviors. Similar phrases such as “He won’t eat that” or “She only likes pasta” serves to reinforce the behavior and gives tacit approval of what children are doing.
  2. It may sound harsh, but you buy the groceries and children need to eat what you purchase. Stock the pantry and fridge with a variety of healthy foods that you want them to eat. Stop buying cookies, beverages and other foods that cater to their pickiness. The transition won’t be easy – stand firm.
  3. Don’t turn the dinner table into a battlefield. Simply serve the meal and let children eat as much or as little as they want. Eliminate phrases such as “Just try a bite.” Kids are more astute than you think and those types of phrases open the door for children to try to negotiate terms for the return of their picky favorites.
  4. Remember that food isn’t a reward – it’s the fuel the body needs to live, work, and play.
  5. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with serving breakfast foods for lunch or dinner. Mix up the selection and try not to always serve the same dishes for the same meals.
  6. Youngsters want to feel as if they have some control and you can provide that while still getting them to eat healthy. Letting them choose blueberries or strawberries, carrots or cauliflower, or a bagel versus cereal will make them more agreeable about their mealtime selections.
  7. It can be helpful to involve children in the meal preparation and you’ll also be teaching them some valuable life skills.
  8. Keep trying, no matter how long it takes. Youngsters can be extremely resistant to change, just like their adult counterparts. They may try staging “hunger strikes” or throw a tantrum. Stay neutral and don’t give in to manipulative behavior.

Keeping your Yard Mosquito Free

Mosquitos perform an important function as a food source for a variety of avians and predator insects. Their bite is also itchy and has the potential to spread a wide variety of illnesses and diseases to people and pets. You don’t want them in your yard and the following tips are effective at helping to keep the unwanted pests at bay.

Eliminate Standing Water

A mosquito only needs a bottle cap of water to lay eggs and multiply. They mature into water nymphs in just four days, meaning it’s critical to eliminate standing water as soon after a rain as possible and be vigilant about areas where dew collects. Water toys, gardening tools, kiddy pools, and gutters blocked by debris are all places where mosquitos can breed. The water in birdbaths should be changed regularly.

Use Screens

If you open your windows, make sure to use a screen that fits securely in the window. Window screens and screened in porches should be checked to ensure they don’t have spaces large enough to let the insects enter and seals are secure.

Mow, Trim and Fill

Mosquitos hide in tall grass and shaded areas. Keep your lawn mowed, use a trimmer to get around edges, and use a saw to cut back trees and bushes if necessary to let in some sunlight. If your yard has areas that collect water after a rain, fill them in and plant grass.

Use a Fan

Using a fan outdoors may sound odd, but studies have demonstrated a fan is the most effective way to keep mosquitos away, beating out citronella candles, geraniol diffusers, and plant-based repellants. It’s hard for a mosquito to fly against the wind generated from a fan and the device also aids in dispersing carbon dioxide from humans that attracts them.

Long Sleeves and Repellant

If you must be outdoors, minimize exposure by wearing long sleeves, pants, and use an insect repellant that contains DEET. Avoid going outside at dawn or dusk – prime feeding times for mosquitoes.

Hire a Professional

If all else fails and you’re still being bugged by mosquitoes, hire a professional that can treat your lawn and yard with effective chemical solutions. Don’t attempt to do it yourself. The chemicals must be specific and applied in the proper way to prevent harm to people, pets, and wildlife.

Summer Mocktails for Poolside

Nothing beats relaxing by the pool with a cold beverage and a poolside drink doesn’t have to be alcoholic. There are dozens of mocktails available that have all the taste and aesthetic appeal of their alcoholic cousins and youngsters enjoy the “fancy” drinks as much as adults. It makes them feel special and it’s a great way for anyone to enjoy a helping of fruit.

Mocktails are especially beneficial for the body when South Florida temperatures climb and humidity levels increase. They’re cool, refreshing, and are an excellent way to stay hydrated while remaining clear-headed. A quick Internet search will turn up dozens of mocktail recipes that incorporate ingredients encompassing ice cream, cotton candy, juices, and a wide variety of fruits. Some of the most popular mocktails include the following.

Fantasy Float

The two-ingredient goodie combines rainbow sorbet and any preferred flavor of club soda – or clear soda if club soda isn’t available. Place ice cream in a hurricane glass, pour soda over the mix and add a straw. For an extra special treat, garnish with edible glitter.

Feel Good Mocktail

A variation of the Painkiller Mocktail, it contains pineapple juice, orange juice, and coconut cream. Combine the ingredients and mix well before pouring over ice and then shake some more to mix the ingredients. Use toasted coconut flakes to rim the glass, pour over ice, and garnish with maraschino cherries and a pineapple wedge.

Ocean Blue

Blend ice, blue Powerade®, and lemon-lime soda together. Additional ice can be used to “stiffen” a mix that’s too watery. Pour in a clear glass and add a couple of gummy sharks to happily swim around the beverage.

Sparkling Watermelon Kiwi

Lime soda, kiwi slices, watermelon cubes, and ice are all that’s needed for a quick and healthy beverage. Thoroughly mix the ingredients together, serve in a tumbler with a “fancy” straw, and garnish with kiwi slices.

Preplanning is crucial for this type of event and applies in particular if there will be people flying in or driving long distances. Contact the local hotels to see if they offer any group discounts. Trending in Travel: Family Adventure Trips

In the not too distant past, family trips were taken once a year as a vacation. Reservations were booked at a specific resort each year and the activity typically involved a road trip cross country. For families of today, life is something to be experienced to the fullest through adventure trips.

Family adventure trips are No. 1 on the list of things to do for families across the nation and it’s not just the young and daring. Travel trips are multi-generational events that include children, parents, and grandparents. In some instances, grandparents eager to explore, educate and share their experiences are taking their grandchildren on adventure trips and leaving parents at home.

The trend has given rise to specialty events and travel options that are tailored to the desires of the individuals. An increasing number of family groups are choosing to visit foreign lands, with Italy, France and Spain being top destination choices. However, a significant portion of the population is choosing unconventional destinations such as Iceland, the Galapagos Islands, India and Japan.

Still others that are on the hunt for a truly unique experience are taking the road less traveled and booking trips to go whale watching, hot air ballooning, dog sledding, and to visit the Great Barrier Reef. African safaris, sleeping under the Northern Lights, and sand surfing in the Sahara are other options. Snorkeling in exotic locations, volcano surfing, and swimming with dolphins are also popular activities.

For those that want adventure without the risk that comes with extreme activities, water parks and theme parks remain popular, but a substantial number of those seeking something different are choosing outdoor activities at national parks and other locations where they can view wildlife up close, go flying across sand dunes in a buggy, zip line across tree tops, or enjoy an authentic western experience.

No matter what the age, there are millions of people seeking something new and different and family adventure trips top the list of the most highly sought activities. There are adventures to accommodate every desire and interest, allowing anyone to live boldly.

How to Create A Great Party Playlist

Throwing the perfect party is not just about the venue you choose and the food you serve, it is also about creating the perfect playlist to have your guests dancing the night away.

Not sure how to do it?  Follow our advice on how to create a great party playlist.

Tailor your list to suit the occasion

If you are holding a family friendly event, chances are you can forego the banging EDM music and opt for something lower key instead.   Think about the atmosphere you are trying to create before you start thinking about the musical accompaniment and work from there.   A laid back, afternoons social for example is the perfect place for bringing out some of your favorite light jazz and old-school soul tunes, that will help to create a relaxing, friendly atmosphere where people can talk.

If you are planning on partying later into the small hours, add plenty of well-known party anthems at the start of the evening, to help get your guests in the mood.  As the evening goes on, increased the BPM to keep them dancing.  If it’s a seasonal affair, be sure to throw some Christmas tunes in to help everyone get into the spirit of things.

Mix it up

As the nominated DJ for your event, remember that variety is the spice of life. Throw in a variety of slow and fast songs, pop classics, country favorites and other musical styles to keep people interested.  Mixing current hits with old school favorites is also a great way to keep guests of all ages entertained throughout the evening.  You should also space things out evenly, so that you don’t get stuck on one style of music for too long at a time, and always throw in some crowd-pleasers. like Whitney, Britney, Madonna and Beyoncé to really get the party started.

Your Party, Your Playlist

Of course, you want to wow your guests with lots of lovely crowd pleasers, but never be afraid to throw a few of your favorites into the mix too.  Intersperse well known party tunes with some from your own personal playlist to create the perfect party sounds to keep your guests entertained, while still reflecting your own personality.  Don’t go overboard with obscure, one hit wonders though – remember this is a party after all, and not an opportunity for you to educate your guests in your own taste in music.

Review Your Choices Before the Big Day

If you really want to impress with your musical prowess, be sure to listen to your playlist in full at least a couple of times before the event itself.  Listen out loud through your sound system, not your headphones to get a feel for technical anomalies like changes in sound quality.  You should also be prepared to make harsh edits and cut out some songs completely if they don’t fit in with the final cut.  This way, you can create a fine-tuned playlist that will go down a storm.

Enjoy!

When your guests arrive, it’s time to forget about the music and get bust being the best host you can be.  Your carefully created playlist is bound to be a big hit with your guests, so have a drink and join in the fun, and don’t worry about which song comes next, or whether everyone like it.

Finger Foods That Everyone Will Love

A great party is full of good music, excellent entertainment and great tasting food. From sit down dinners to banquets and buffets, the food you serve at your next event will help to make it the best one yet.

Our inflatables add fun and excitement to parties, fairs and festivals throughout South Florida, but it’s the personal touches you add with your food that really brings the flavor.

Think beyond plain old burgers and pizza and add some sparkle to your holiday finger food this holiday season.  Stuck for inspiration? Try these ideas for size:

Pastry Pigs with Cheese and Cider Dipping Sauce

For a modern twist on pigs in blankets, try wrapping cocktail franks in pretzel dough and baking in the oven, before mixing up a simple white sauce with tangy cheddar and sharp cider for a delicious contrast of flavors.

Egg Buffet Bites

Boiled eggs are a great base for easy canapés and finger foods.  For the festive season, go for a different take on the classic deviled egg recipe, and add flavorful toppings instead of mayonnaise.  Try salmon and dill leaves, or bacon and green onion for an easy, tasty, festive feast.

Bruschetta

Super easy to make, and just as easy to devour, Bruschetta is a classic Italian finger food that works well all year round. The key to a great bruschetta is the wonderful combination of flavors.  Rub garlic on the bread itself, before topping with the freshest, juiciest tomatoes, basil and olive oil.  Grill before serving for a simple, tasty snack that makes a welcome change from stodgy pizza.

Ham and Cheese Sliders

An easy alternative to burgers, these sliders are perfect for kids and adults and are easy to eat with a drink in one hand, and a plate in the other.  Make tiny layered sandwiches using freshly baked bread or brioche and fill them with layers of good quality cheese and delicately flavored ham. Grill for just a few moments to make the bread soft, and the cheese gooey.

Turkey and Cranberry Sliders

Just like above, these sliders are easy to eat and simple to make.  Use good quality cold cuts, or cook your bird from fresh, and layer a good size dollop of cranberry sauce on fresh white bread or brioche to make delicious, mini festive sandwich bites.

Savory Christmas Trees

Using salami and cheese layered between store brought puff pastry, simply fold the strips of dough accordion style and place on a skewer.  Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or so and add a green olive to top off your tree.

Whiskey Meatballs

Meatballs on cocktail sticks make the most awesome finger foods.  Go for a more grown-up variation on the theme by letting the meatballs simmer in sugar, ketchup, lemon juice and bourbon whiskey to make them melt-in-the-mouth delicious.  Place them on a cocktail stick and serve hot.

Pastries, pretzels, sandwiches, salads, crackers, cookies, cakes and candies are also great ways to stave off hunger as you and your guests enjoy a holiday party this Christmas.
