Fun Backyard Games

Summer is a time for gathering with family and friends. To make the most of every get-together, it’s a good idea to plan for some fun backyard games. There are dozens of selections from which to choose and accommodate multiple interests and ages. For anyone that’s not sure how to play, rules are available online.

Ladder Golf®

The game is played with 3 golf ball bolos. The object of the game is for players to wrap the bolos around any of the 3 “steps” of an upright “ladder.” Players begin by taking 5 steps from the ladder before throwing their bolos at the ladder. The game is played in rounds, with each individual trying to obtain a score of exactly 21 points.

Cornhole

A perennial favorite, players toss a bag filled with corn, beans or synthetic material and try to get their bag through the hole of a cornhole board. Individuals can play by rules established by the American Cornhole Association or house rules. The goal is to attain a score of 21.

4 in a Row

Similar to the popular board game, players drop disks in a grid in an effort to get 4 in a row, while blocking an opponent from connecting 4 in a row.

Backyard Bowling

The family favorite moves from the bowling alley to the backyard with inflatable pins and a large, soft ball. Players can roll the ball, kick it or throw it to knock down as many pins as possible.

Badminton

A game for all ages, a badminton set comes with everything needed to play. Individuals can play for points if they’re competitive, or just have fun batting the birdie back and forth.

Ring Toss

The beauty of the game is that the target can be a cone, a box, or a marked off space on the ground. Each player gets the same number of colored rings and throws them in an effort to hit the target. The player with the most rings on the cone or in the box at the end of their turn wins.

Keeping your Yard Mosquito Free

Mosquitos perform an important function as a food source for a variety of avians and predator insects. Their bite is also itchy and has the potential to spread a wide variety of illnesses and diseases to people and pets. You don’t want them in your yard and the following tips are effective at helping to keep the unwanted pests at bay.

Eliminate Standing Water

A mosquito only needs a bottle cap of water to lay eggs and multiply. They mature into water nymphs in just four days, meaning it’s critical to eliminate standing water as soon after a rain as possible and be vigilant about areas where dew collects. Water toys, gardening tools, kiddy pools, and gutters blocked by debris are all places where mosquitos can breed. The water in birdbaths should be changed regularly.

Use Screens

If you open your windows, make sure to use a screen that fits securely in the window. Window screens and screened in porches should be checked to ensure they don’t have spaces large enough to let the insects enter and seals are secure.

Mow, Trim and Fill

Mosquitos hide in tall grass and shaded areas. Keep your lawn mowed, use a trimmer to get around edges, and use a saw to cut back trees and bushes if necessary to let in some sunlight. If your yard has areas that collect water after a rain, fill them in and plant grass.

Use a Fan

Using a fan outdoors may sound odd, but studies have demonstrated a fan is the most effective way to keep mosquitos away, beating out citronella candles, geraniol diffusers, and plant-based repellants. It’s hard for a mosquito to fly against the wind generated from a fan and the device also aids in dispersing carbon dioxide from humans that attracts them.

Long Sleeves and Repellant

If you must be outdoors, minimize exposure by wearing long sleeves, pants, and use an insect repellant that contains DEET. Avoid going outside at dawn or dusk – prime feeding times for mosquitoes.

Hire a Professional

If all else fails and you’re still being bugged by mosquitoes, hire a professional that can treat your lawn and yard with effective chemical solutions. Don’t attempt to do it yourself. The chemicals must be specific and applied in the proper way to prevent harm to people, pets, and wildlife.

Family Beach Essentials

Almost everyone has arrived for a day at the beach, only to discover they need something they didn’t pack or they’ve included a lot of unnecessary items. Parents are charged with remembering everything from sunscreen to toys, but they don’t have to be pack animals. With a few simple adjustments, parents can remember all the essentials, lighten their load, and have a relaxing day of sun and sand with the children.

A waterproof carryall bag should be the first thing on a beach-goer’s bucket list for every member of the family, even children. If a child wants to take sand toys to the beach, they need to carry it themselves in their own tote bag.

Sunscreen is an absolutely critical item for the beach. Be sure to have enough to apply multiple times and that it has a high SPF rating. Sunscreen will need to be reapplied frequently.

Make sure everyone has a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses that block UVB and UVA rays that damage skin. To save money and keep everyone fed and hydrated, a rolling suitcase-style insulated cooler is a must-have.

No one wants to lounge on the beach unprotected from the heat radiating from the sand. A single large beach blanket will do the trick and they’re available in materials that won’t trap sand and makes cleaning a breeze. It’s also a good idea to have a compact beach towel in which to wrap a child that’s cold from being in the water. Parents may prefer a beach chair for lounging and they’re offered in lightweight models with convenient carry straps.

Umbrellas provide shade for adults and children, but they can be limited in scope and difficult to keep anchored in the sand. For younger children, a small, popup tent can be helpful for shielding youngsters from the sun.

It’s also a good idea to invest in a waterproof and sand proof bag for phones. It will ensure the devices are safe and are always ready if needed. A day at the beach is fun for everyone and it will be more enjoyable when families take the essentials and pare down the unnecessary items they take.
