Fun Backyard Games

Summer is a time for gathering with family and friends. To make the most of every get-together, it’s a good idea to plan for some fun backyard games. There are dozens of selections from which to choose and accommodate multiple interests and ages. For anyone that’s not sure how to play, rules are available online.

Ladder Golf®

The game is played with 3 golf ball bolos. The object of the game is for players to wrap the bolos around any of the 3 “steps” of an upright “ladder.” Players begin by taking 5 steps from the ladder before throwing their bolos at the ladder. The game is played in rounds, with each individual trying to obtain a score of exactly 21 points.

Cornhole

A perennial favorite, players toss a bag filled with corn, beans or synthetic material and try to get their bag through the hole of a cornhole board. Individuals can play by rules established by the American Cornhole Association or house rules. The goal is to attain a score of 21.

4 in a Row

Similar to the popular board game, players drop disks in a grid in an effort to get 4 in a row, while blocking an opponent from connecting 4 in a row.

Backyard Bowling

The family favorite moves from the bowling alley to the backyard with inflatable pins and a large, soft ball. Players can roll the ball, kick it or throw it to knock down as many pins as possible.

Badminton

A game for all ages, a badminton set comes with everything needed to play. Individuals can play for points if they’re competitive, or just have fun batting the birdie back and forth.

Ring Toss

The beauty of the game is that the target can be a cone, a box, or a marked off space on the ground. Each player gets the same number of colored rings and throws them in an effort to hit the target. The player with the most rings on the cone or in the box at the end of their turn wins.

Benefits of Exercise on Kids’ Mental Health

Much has been said and written about the importance and benefits of exercise on a child’s physical health. However, little has been reported about the impact it has on mental health – which is considerable. The focus isn’t on building muscle and endurance, though that’s a side benefit. The goal is overall mental wellbeing.

Even moderate levels of activity are beneficial. There’s a multitude of activities in which children can engage and it doesn’t have to include organized sports or a regimented routine. Bike riding, swimming, Frisbee, disc golf, badminton, rollerblading and skateboarding are all effective means of getting needed exercise.

Mood

Exercise stimulates the body to release dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, all of which trigger a feeling of positivity and wellbeing in the brain. All three of the body’s natural chemicals play a critical role in regulating mood and creates a feeling similar to that of morphine in adults.

Pain

Those three chemicals are the body’s own natural response to exercise. They function as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and sedative.

Anxiety, Stress, Depression & ADHD

Exercise has been proven to be an effective treatment for managing anxiety, stress, depression, and even ADHD. Unfortunately, it’s a highly overlooked and underused therapy that’s typically reserved for weight loss and to aid in diabetes treatment.

Cognitive Abilities

The improvement in mood that comes with exercise also works to enhance the mind. Youngsters that exercise improve their cognitive abilities. They demonstrate better memory and enhanced concentration. Exercise is a powerful tool for honing decision-making skills and better processing of information.

Confidence and Self-Esteem

Trying new physical activities increases confidence and self-esteem. That includes an improved body image.

Sleep and Relaxation

Even when children are participating in high-activity exercise, it acts to relax the body and mind. The result is a more restful slumber and deeper sleep.

Popular Party Themes for Kids

A kid’s interest can seem to change from day-to-day and a themed party that brings elements of their favorite things to life is a surprise that any youngster loves. The following are some of the most popular themes for kids age 5-8. Parents can use their own judgement should their child have different interests.

A memorable and fun party doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are dozens of dollar stores that have everything from disposable plates and balloons to banners and other types of decorations. It’s easy on the budget and even enables parents to send home a goody bag with the kids.

Amusement Park

There’s a wealth of age-appropriate inflatable amusements available to keep kids busy ranging from water slides to bounce houses, many of which feature themes ranging from fairy tales to race cars. Carnival type games encompass life-size board games and mazes to skee ball. In keeping with the amusement park theme, parents can rent cotton candy, popcorn, snow cone, and hot dog machines.

Let It Snow

The cold, white precipitation is a rarity in Florida and snow machines can be rented to transform a yard into a temporary winter wonderland. Add snowflakes, snowmen and similar decorations to round out the theme.

Bubble Blowout

Kids of all ages love bubbles and in addition to bottles so they can blow their own, consider renting a bubble machine. The kids can run through them and play make-believe to their heart’s content. Instead of a large birthday cake, think about cupcakes that are easier for little hands to handle.

Superheroes

Have the kids attend in their favorite superhero costume. There’s no shortage of superhero decorations, cake toppers, and craft ideas that kids can make at the party.

Glow-in-the-Dark

This is ideal for a late evening party. Kids are fascinated by anything that glows in the dark. Set the tone with glow-in-the-dark jewelry, glowsticks, swords and hanging decorations. Parents can purchase napkins, tablecloths and goody bags that glow in the dark, and there are even edible lollipops that glow.

Why Physical Activity is so Important for Kids

Sending the kids out to play does more than giving them the opportunity to burn off excess energy and give parents a break. There’s a wealth of health effects associated with any type of physical activity and it doesn’t have to be a regimented routine or be sports-based to be beneficial.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends at least 60 minutes of exercise each day, with more intense exercise on three of those days. That can take many forms, from rollerblading, ice skating and skateboarding to swimming, shooting hoops or simply playing in the park.

Heart and Lungs

The heart and lungs continue to develop as children grow. Exercise improves the functioning of both those organs. Strengthening the heart and lungs enables the body to more easily pump oxygenated blood to all areas of the body and increases lung capacity.

Bones and Muscles

Bones and muscles grow and strengthen as children mature and exercise enables that process to occur. With regular exercise, bones become stronger and denser, thereby reducing the risk of injuries. Muscles are better able to withstand any stressors.

Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

People that get regular amounts of exercise have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels that reduce their potential for cardiac-related problems. Exercise lowers “bad” cholesterol while elevating levels of “good” cholesterol.

Weight Control and Diabetes

People understand that exercise burns calories and is a major part of weight control. It can also be helpful for preventing the development of diabetes since it aids in controlling glucose levels and how the body utilizes energy.

Anxiety and Depression

Exercise stimulates the body to release endorphins. The natural chemical in the body triggers a positive feeling within the brain and is beneficial for relieving stress, anxiety and depression. The same endorphins are also released when a person is injured to reduce the perception of pain. Adults experience the same effect when they get a massage.

Socialization

When children of any age get exercise through play with other youngsters, it improves their social skills. They learn socially appropriate behavior, how to take turns, and play in groups.

Memory and Cognitive Function

A child’s memory, concentration and ability to learn are all improved when they obtain sufficient exercise. They tend to get better grades and have attendance.

Great Tween Reads

A lot of emphasis has been placed on books for young children, but it’s just as important for tweens to have access to inspiring and entertaining reading material. There are dozens of good stories and parents need to remember that their tweens can have significantly different reading tastes and interests than they do.

As long as it’s appropriate for the age and sensibilities of the child, it doesn’t matter whether tweens are reading religious, fantasy, horror, or mystery stories. The important thing is that they’re reading. The following are just some of the books that represent great tween reads.

All of Me by Chris Baron

Body positivity and image isn’t just a “girl thing.” Ari is bullied for being overweight, his mother insists he start a diet, and his parents are divorcing. Despite everything that he’s experiencing, Ari finds friends, a way to be positive about himself, and feel comfortable in his own skin.

Pax by Sara Pennypacker

The heartwarming story is the tale of Pax the fox that’s rescued as a baby by Peter. When Peter’s father joins the Army, he sends Peter to live with his grandfather and demands Pax be returned to the wild. Peter is determined to be reunited with his friend and Pax waits patiently for the return of his boy. It’s a New York Times Bestseller that will touch the heart of readers in deeply profound ways. It’s won several awards, is a New York Times Bestseller, and an Amazon Book of the Year.

Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan

Any of the books in the Percy Jackson series are excellent reads. The son of Poseidon, Percy struggles to find himself and how he fits into the normal world, along with one filled with demigods and heroes of old come to life. The series has won numerous awards in the U.S. and abroad.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill

Explicit references, objectionable language, and undesirable slang can be found everywhere in today’s music. It can be exceedingly difficult for parents to locate tunes that are age-appropriate, align with their values, and still remain fun for kids. The good news is that there are dozens of streaming sites and those that enable downloading that feature parent-approved music for youngsters of all ages. Some of those include the following, in no particular order.

Radio Disney

The service is free and offers a kids version of the Top 40s. Songs are performed by actors and actresses youngsters will recognize from the Disney Channel. The service also features unknown or little known teens with amazing voices.

Spotify

Known the world over, Spotify is said to have the largest library. Selections can be chosen by genre, playlist or mood. Lyrics aren’t filtered on the site, though “clean” versions are offered. Parents will need to manually select the clean versions. It’s free with ads and a membership is required to play on-demand or offline.

YouTube Kids

Accessible via web or app, it’s free to use. Parents will find original songs, classic tunes, and even videos to keep youngsters occupied. Kids App caters to young listeners and is searchable by a variety of criteria.

6 Parenting Styles Explained

Parenting isn’t an easy endeavor. Child experts do agree, however, that the parenting style that individuals utilize will affect the way children feel about themselves and even how they perform in school. The six basic parenting styles are as follows.

Attachment

Affection and physical touch are utilized to cement the bond between parent and child. It’s an approach that focuses on balance, consistent care, sensitivity, and positive discipline. Separation from parents is minimalized. Baby-wearing, breast feeding on demand, and skin-to-skin touch are emphasized. Youngsters cry less as babies, feel secure, and have fewer behavior issues. The method can be rewarding for parents, but very exhausting.

Authoritarian

This is a very strict approach in which obedience is the goal. Power is achieved through control and input from children isn’t considered. It employs strict rules and harsh discipline and punishment for transgressions. Kids raised in this style make few impulsive decisions, are respectful, and follow rules. The negative aspect is that they have low self-esteem, often feel depressed, are withdrawn, and feel afraid and unwanted.

Authoritative

This parenting style sets firm limits and boundaries for children. Parents are supportive and nurturing, listen to the input of their kids, and use logic to determine each course of action. They employ positive discipline methods and hold youngsters accountable for their own actions. The result is children that are achievers, independent, happy, and maintain good relationships with their parents.

Free-Lance

Parents provide supervision of the children and their activities. The emphasis is on allowing each child to mature at their own pace through education and allowing them to take safe risks. Children learn independence, coping skills and resilience. It’s similar to permissive parenting, but with significant differences.

Permissive

While nurturing and loving, the style tends toward leniency and inconsistency in the discipline department. The style focuses on being a friend rather than a parent. Kids have a great deal of freedom, little structure, and few responsibilities. The parenting style creates kids that are self-confident, creative, and free thinkers. Conversely, they often have difficulty following rules required in the adult world, experience aggression and depression, don’t do well in school, and lack control and social skills.

Uninvolved/Neglectful

Parents meet youngsters’ emotional and physical needs, but exert little supervision and offer a lot of freedom. There’s little or no discipline, guidance, attention, or nurturing. There are no expectations for kids to meet. These children grow up with low self-esteem, have trust issues, little self-confidence, and have difficulty forming relationships.

No Right Way

The uninvolved/neglectful parenting style is the most damaging to children and results in long-lasting negative impacts. All children don’t respond in the same way to a single method. It’s possible for a child reared in a loving and compassionate home to be insecure and unprincipled as an adult, while children with strict and domineering parents can grow to be well-balanced adults. Environments of love, acceptance, and safety give kids the best chance of success.

Letting Kids Fail can Teach Life-Long Lessons

Every parent wants their children to be safe and avoid injuries whether they come in the form of physical or mental discomfort. Watching a child fail brings forth a variety of parental emotions. It’s a natural reaction, but as much as parents want to insulate them from the world, allowing kids to try and fail is the best teacher and they’ll be learning important lessons they’ll carry with them throughout their lifetime.

Children learn the same way adults do – trial and error – and it’s an effective teacher. Parents can warn children about consequences, but a child won’t fully grasp the concept unless they actually experience penalties. From forgetting their homework to leaving their bike in the driveway, a less than stellar grade or a stolen bike teaches a valuable lesson about responsibility and accountability for their own actions.

Parents that try to “fix” their kids’ grades –and succeed – are simply teaching their child that might makes right and that with enough power, they don’t have to take responsibility. Children know if they’re failing a subject and they may lie about it – until the report card makes it impossible to hide. While a bad grade isn’t a crisis, lying about it should carry consequences.

Part of the problem is that today’s parenting gurus equate good parenting with not allowing their children to experience “negative emotions.” Those feelings teach youngsters coping skills and how to avoid situations in the future that evoke those feelings.

There are numerous opportunities for learning and growth when parents take a step back. It happens with small actions from something as simple as learning to wait their turn in line. Kids learn qualities of patience, tolerance and responsibility. When teen drama occurs, parents should take a back seat and let kids learn to work it out on their own – the exception is if they’re being bullied in person or online.

Just as adults learn that failure to complete their tasks to the best of their ability and on time comes with consequences, so children learn through smaller examples in everyday life. Children that are allowed to fail grow up to become competent, responsible, resilient and empowered adults.
