Kid Friendly Favorites from the Air Fryer

Air fryers are a healthy alternative to frying foods in oil or baking in the oven. They’re especially beneficial as they can reduce the number of calories by up to 80 percent. There are dozens of foods that can be prepared in an air fryer that are also kid favorites.

One of the benefits is that foods cook faster – even frozen items – making it possible to quickly prepare foods from the freezer to the air fryer. It can be difficult to get youngsters to eat some foods, but air frying opens up new horizons. The following are just some kid favorite foods to cook in an air fryer.

Corn Dogs

There’s something about a hotdog surrounded by a cornbread coating that kids love and part of the attraction is that the food is on a stick.

Chicken Tenders/Nuggets

Whether it’s chicken tenders or nuggets, it’s a healthy alternative to chicken fried in oil or even baked chicken.

Tater Tots/French Fries

One of the benefits of an air fryer is that cooks can get the desired crispiness for fries and tots without the need to deep fry them. The same is true if a child is a fan of sweet potato or zucchini chips or onion rings.

Pizza Rolls/Pockets

A finger food with the flavor of pizza – it’s no wonder that they’re a kid favorite – and they can easily be prepared for an after-school snack or for the lunchbox. Use pita bread rounds to make personalized mini pizzas.

French Toast

When the breakfast food is prepared in an air fryer it typically comes out extra crispy, providing a perfect base for syrup or fruit toppings. French toast can also be cut into “fingers” for dipping.

Mozzarella Sticks

Just pop frozen mozzarella sticks in the air fryer for a quick and healthy snack. Pair the cheese sticks with any type of dipping sauce the child likes best.

Pigs in a Blanket

The tasty smokies wrapped in a crescent roll aren’t just hors d’oeuvres for adult parties. Kids love them too and they make a delicious finger food snack.

Benefits of Exercise on Kids’ Mental Health

Much has been said and written about the importance and benefits of exercise on a child’s physical health. However, little has been reported about the impact it has on mental health – which is considerable. The focus isn’t on building muscle and endurance, though that’s a side benefit. The goal is overall mental wellbeing.

Even moderate levels of activity are beneficial. There’s a multitude of activities in which children can engage and it doesn’t have to include organized sports or a regimented routine. Bike riding, swimming, Frisbee, disc golf, badminton, rollerblading and skateboarding are all effective means of getting needed exercise.

Mood

Exercise stimulates the body to release dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, all of which trigger a feeling of positivity and wellbeing in the brain. All three of the body’s natural chemicals play a critical role in regulating mood and creates a feeling similar to that of morphine in adults.

Pain

Those three chemicals are the body’s own natural response to exercise. They function as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and sedative.

Anxiety, Stress, Depression & ADHD

Exercise has been proven to be an effective treatment for managing anxiety, stress, depression, and even ADHD. Unfortunately, it’s a highly overlooked and underused therapy that’s typically reserved for weight loss and to aid in diabetes treatment.

Cognitive Abilities

The improvement in mood that comes with exercise also works to enhance the mind. Youngsters that exercise improve their cognitive abilities. They demonstrate better memory and enhanced concentration. Exercise is a powerful tool for honing decision-making skills and better processing of information.

Confidence and Self-Esteem

Trying new physical activities increases confidence and self-esteem. That includes an improved body image.

Sleep and Relaxation

Even when children are participating in high-activity exercise, it acts to relax the body and mind. The result is a more restful slumber and deeper sleep.

Kids Party Essentials

outdoor event

Kids of all ages love a party, but it’s essential to have some party games and activities planned to keep them fully engaged. With the wide range of affordable inflatables available, a kid’s party can take many forms. Hosts can choose a waterslide for a beach theme, inflatable carnival games, or even a rock-climbing wall. The choices are almost endless and there are options for youngsters of any age.

There are inflatable mazes, virtual roller coasters and bungee trampolines from which to choose, along with robo surfers and skateboarding games. Guests can test their skills on a ninja wall, in Zorb balls, mini golf, human foosball and Hungry Hungry Hippo for younger children. Kids interested in tech-related activities can engage in interactive space activities, a disco dome, sumo arena or human size lawn games.

For those that prefer an old-school approach, there’s always musical chairs, bean bag toss, treasure hunt, and clothespin drop. Water balloon fights and variations such as water balloon bust is a great way to let kids have good, clean fun while staying cool. A bucket toss is always fun and an old-school approach introduces today’s kids age 5-12 to games with which they may not be familiar.

Pass the Parcel requires a little preparation, but it’s an especially fun game for younger children. The game can also be played so that every child receives a lollipop or other small prize so no one feels left out. An egg toss is popular with teens and tweens, especially if raw eggs are being used. A pinata always guarantees a good time – just be sure to keep other children far from the child swinging at the pinata.

There are party games and activities for children of any age and to accommodate any budget. It doesn’t matter whether hosts choose an old-school approach or opt for one or more inflatables for the party, children are sure to be pleased.

Popular Party Themes for Kids

A kid’s interest can seem to change from day-to-day and a themed party that brings elements of their favorite things to life is a surprise that any youngster loves. The following are some of the most popular themes for kids age 5-8. Parents can use their own judgement should their child have different interests.

A memorable and fun party doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are dozens of dollar stores that have everything from disposable plates and balloons to banners and other types of decorations. It’s easy on the budget and even enables parents to send home a goody bag with the kids.

Amusement Park

There’s a wealth of age-appropriate inflatable amusements available to keep kids busy ranging from water slides to bounce houses, many of which feature themes ranging from fairy tales to race cars. Carnival type games encompass life-size board games and mazes to skee ball. In keeping with the amusement park theme, parents can rent cotton candy, popcorn, snow cone, and hot dog machines.

Let It Snow

The cold, white precipitation is a rarity in Florida and snow machines can be rented to transform a yard into a temporary winter wonderland. Add snowflakes, snowmen and similar decorations to round out the theme.

Bubble Blowout

Kids of all ages love bubbles and in addition to bottles so they can blow their own, consider renting a bubble machine. The kids can run through them and play make-believe to their heart’s content. Instead of a large birthday cake, think about cupcakes that are easier for little hands to handle.

Superheroes

Have the kids attend in their favorite superhero costume. There’s no shortage of superhero decorations, cake toppers, and craft ideas that kids can make at the party.

Glow-in-the-Dark

This is ideal for a late evening party. Kids are fascinated by anything that glows in the dark. Set the tone with glow-in-the-dark jewelry, glowsticks, swords and hanging decorations. Parents can purchase napkins, tablecloths and goody bags that glow in the dark, and there are even edible lollipops that glow.

Why Physical Activity is so Important for Kids

Sending the kids out to play does more than giving them the opportunity to burn off excess energy and give parents a break. There’s a wealth of health effects associated with any type of physical activity and it doesn’t have to be a regimented routine or be sports-based to be beneficial.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends at least 60 minutes of exercise each day, with more intense exercise on three of those days. That can take many forms, from rollerblading, ice skating and skateboarding to swimming, shooting hoops or simply playing in the park.

Heart and Lungs

The heart and lungs continue to develop as children grow. Exercise improves the functioning of both those organs. Strengthening the heart and lungs enables the body to more easily pump oxygenated blood to all areas of the body and increases lung capacity.

Bones and Muscles

Bones and muscles grow and strengthen as children mature and exercise enables that process to occur. With regular exercise, bones become stronger and denser, thereby reducing the risk of injuries. Muscles are better able to withstand any stressors.

Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

People that get regular amounts of exercise have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels that reduce their potential for cardiac-related problems. Exercise lowers “bad” cholesterol while elevating levels of “good” cholesterol.

Weight Control and Diabetes

People understand that exercise burns calories and is a major part of weight control. It can also be helpful for preventing the development of diabetes since it aids in controlling glucose levels and how the body utilizes energy.

Anxiety and Depression

Exercise stimulates the body to release endorphins. The natural chemical in the body triggers a positive feeling within the brain and is beneficial for relieving stress, anxiety and depression. The same endorphins are also released when a person is injured to reduce the perception of pain. Adults experience the same effect when they get a massage.

Socialization

When children of any age get exercise through play with other youngsters, it improves their social skills. They learn socially appropriate behavior, how to take turns, and play in groups.

Memory and Cognitive Function

A child’s memory, concentration and ability to learn are all improved when they obtain sufficient exercise. They tend to get better grades and have attendance.

Artificial intelligence enables the app to automatically adjust and keep kids challenged as they become more proficient. It’s available for the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android operating system. The cost is $1.99 and doesn’t require Wi-Fi or data.

It contains books, videos, games, songs and other activities. In many ways, it functions as a digital preschool teacher. It’s available for the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android, and Kindle Fire. It’s free and doesn’t require data or Wi-Fi.

Project Noah

The app is being redesigned and will be launched again in the fall of 2020. The citizen science app enables students to document sightings of different wildlife species. Participants earn digital patches for their submissions and can view local and worldwide sightings. The app also contains missions that students can join based on their specific location. It’s available for iPhone and Android operating systems.

Birthday parties are an excellent opportunity to let youngsters live their fantasy, whether it’s sailing the high seas as a pirate or exploring the vast outer reaches of space. Even if the guest list is predominantly male or female, there are dozens of themes that will appeal to boys and girls of every age. The following are some of the most popular themes for kids in the age range of 3-9 years old.

Movies

From “Frozen” and “How to Train Your Dragon” to the loveable Minions and Monsters of movie fame, the only limitations to decorations and activities are the imagination. Balloons, bounce houses, and streamers, along with premade accessory and decorating kits are all available. Parents can also include a showing of the movie to complement the theme.

Outer Space

Whether their child is a fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, or space in general, parents have a lot of latitude when planning a space-themed party. A spaceship or rocket-shaped cake, balloons, glitter star garlands, tubes of “alien” slime, and foam adhesive planets and stars are just some of the many options available for decorating.

The darling of the Nickelodeon network, SpongeBob holds universal appeal for the younger generation. One of the benefits is that a SpongeBob-themed party can be held as a “dry” party or a pool party, with a wading pool, regular sized pool, or inflatables. Just add tropical and underwater style décor, along with cutouts and balloons of the famous cartoon characters.

Superheroes

For children that are enamored of superheroes, parents will find a wealth of choices, from inflatable bounce houses and life-sized cutouts to tableware. There’s an equally comprehensive array of favor boxes and bags, balloons, and cake toppers to masks, streamers, and superhero-themed fan decorations to create ambiance. Have guests dress as their favorite superhero.

There are also options for all-girl or all-boy parties. Mermaids and princesses continue to be extremely popular with girls, while LEGO® and video game themes remain a favorite of boys. Parents might want to consider a photo booth as a unique way to commemorate the party for older youngsters. It’s also an ideal time to introduce younger children to activities that include treasure hunt or magnetic fishing games that match the party theme.
