Holiday Events and Winter Festivals

Even though snow in South Florida isn’t typically on the menu, there’s no shortage of special holiday events and festivals to keep people occupied during the holiday season. Tree lighting ceremonies, holiday parties to benefit charities, and New Year’s celebrations are all part of the festivities available for residents and visitors.

Kick off the holidays with the Jingle All the Way! Tree Lighting ceremony on Sat. Nov. 23 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. in Mizner Park, followed by a fireworks display. Free and open to the public, it’s conducted by Fun4SoFlkids.com and includes free carnival rides, live entertainment, letters to Santa, and photos with Santa.

It’s a party when Santa pays an early visit to the Pompano Citi Centre on Sat., Nov. 30 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The Jolly Old Elf arrives via fire truck for the parade and the event features a performance by the Snow Queen. Face painting and activities are planned for kids and parents can use their cameras/phones to get free photos with Santa.

The 6th annual 4Ever Young Holiday Charity event is an adult only activity on Friday, Dec. 6 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Free and open to the public, it features a vodka and wine bar from 6-9 p.m. and attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped toy for complimentary entry.

Adults are invited to dance the night away with music from the live DJ at the Masquerade Soiree on Sat., Dec. 21 from 8 p.m.-midnight. Tickets are $50 and include food and a Chance Auction.

Experience it All

There are so many special events and festivals planned for the holiday season in South Florida the only problem will be fitting them all in. While most activities are family-friendly and designed primarily for children, there are also numerous events scheduled for adults-only fun. Families can have breakfast with Santa, sport their ugly Christmas sweaters while running for charity, enjoy concerts of holiday music, and find a wealth of unique gifts at Christmas bazaars. Happy Holidays!

Popular South Florida Bike Paths

Biking for exercise and recreation is one of the most popular activities in the U.S. and counts among its ranks more than 47.5 million people. South Florida has some of the most beautiful bike paths in the nation where cyclists can enjoy beachside views, parks and historic sites.

Bill Baggs State Park

Towering trees and Biscayne Bay are just part of the views to enjoy. Bike rentals are available for the 1.5 mile trail and some people have even been fortunate enough to see a manatee.

Cypress Creek Greenway

The seven-mile trail goes by parks with restrooms, parking and other amenities. There’s little shade, so be sure and bring sunscreen, wear a hat, and stay hydrated.

Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail

Scenic and educational, it stretches 70 miles past historic railroad bridges, marine and wildlife refuges, and bike rentals are available.

Hollywood Beach Boardwalk

Constructed in the 1920s, the trail runs 2.5 miles past parks, shops, restaurants and hotels. It’s been recognized as one of “10 Great Public Spaces.” It’s paved in brick and can be extremely busy as pedestrians also use it. Riders can stop for a snack and go swimming if they’d like.

Jonathan Dickinson State Park

The park contains both paved and nature trails to bike. The land was once a top secret training facility for the Signal Corps during World War II for the new –at the time – development of radar.

Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail

The trail goes around Lake Okeechobee on top of the Herbert Hoover Dike. There are paved and gravel portions, and the trail diverts in some places around locks and on roadways.

Old Cutler Trail

The path is 11 miles long and bikers can see ficus and banyan trees, rest in a park, and explore the natural gifts that each park has to offer.

Shark Valley Trail

Famous for its wildlife, bikers can view a variety of birds and animals along the 15 mile loop. Cyclists can also drink in the vista at the observation tower. A hat, sunscreen and water are essential for traveling this trail.

Party Planning 101

If you have been strictly keeping tabs on your calendar lately, one can understand why; it is springtime. The bitter cold has paved the way for warmth while the vegetation is sprouting again. Flowers are in full blossom, and the grass is green all over you. When you look out the window, the outdoors is beckoning you to sample the beautiful weather. One thought that comes to mind is that of inviting your family, friends, and neighbors to an outdoor spring party.

However, with a celebratory event where people come over to your house, you need to plan. The tips below are sure to give you a head start.

Make early preparations

Springtime is for everyone, and they all want to enjoy the warm weather. Before people start getting busy, send them invitations in advance. Wisdom advises that you plan your event one or two months before the season kicks. At the same time, you give your guests ample time to confirm before they receive other engagements. Decide on the number of people to invite depending on your budget and space in your backyard.

Work out the menu

Depending on your budget, you could plan to hire a caterer for the day. Outsourcing saves you the trouble of cleaning up after everyone has left. You also find sufficient time to mingle with your guests, something that makes the party memorable. Whether self or outside-catered, you need to plan your menu as well as snacks for children. If you intend to have a barbeque, make adequate arrangements for grilling.

Drinks

Guests expect that you will serve them beverages at some point. Choose your beverages such that they cut across both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic types. Consider having a central serving location, but for large parties, you can hire a bartender. Also, have some fresh fruit juices and sodas for children. Remember bottled water too. Keep the drinks chilled in coolers; you can borrow a few for the occasion.

Entertainment

Your options might vary depending on the guest list. All the same, you could hire a DJ outfit complete with equipment. The other option is to improvise by putting your speakers at strategic points in the yard. You might need additional cables to enable the speakers to reach the farthest corner of the yard. Go through your CD collection and pick the music that your guests would love. If on self-entertainment, assign someone the responsibility of changing the CDs for continuity.

Décor

Decorate the site creatively to set the mood for a party. You could hire some deck chairs and arrange them around a fireplace; it might get cold in the evening.

Sum-up

Parties are a fantastic idea for bringing people together especially after months of hibernation. Make yours exciting by throwing weight on the preparation. Plan your menu several weeks before and include food choices that cater to different people. Drinks are a must; have some beer, wine, water, soda, and juice. Hire a DJ or provide your own music to set the party mood.

Catch a Train Ride in Your Pajamas!

The Sunshine Music Festival Offers More than Songs!

Now that you’ve heard about snow and a holiday train let’s point out the Sunshine Music Festival to kick off Jan 14th, 2018 at the Mizner Park Amphitheater.
