Can I Put My Bounce House on the Grass, Cement or Gravel?

You’ve made the decision to rent an inflatable bounce house for your party. Now you have to choose where it will be set up. A bounce house can be set up in multiple locations, but the surface it will rest upon is a primary consideration.

Will it Ruin My Grass?

A bounce house won’t ruin your lawn, but there is the potential for discoloration due to a combination of dry soil and hot sun. Grass can go dormant when it’s stressed from those factors, but grass is exceptionally resilient and will return.

Grass, Gravel and Cement

The optimal placement is on grass and the surface must be free of twigs, sticks, rocks, and sprinkler heads that could puncture the inflatable. It can also be set up on gravel that’s relatively small and packed down, along with cement, concrete and asphalt. Always place a bounce house away from fences, buildings, trees with low overhanging branches, and overhead utility lines of all types.

Flat vs Slope

Placing a bounce house on a slope is never a good idea. Even a small slope can result in injuries to users. The inflatable should be set up on a surface that’s as flat and level as possible.

Anchors, Wind and Rain

There are some conditions under which an inflatable should never be operated. When on grass, bounce houses are anchored with stakes in the ground with tie downs. Sandbags are used to anchor the inflatable on cement, concrete or asphalt.

A bounce house shouldn’t be operated in the rain or when the wind is strong enough to blow around soil or fine gravel. Ground anchors may not hold in those conditions and sand bag anchors certainly won’t. The primary goal with a bounce house is to provide safe fun for children, while preserving the integrity of the inflatable.

Where’s the Best Place to Have the Bounce House Set Up?

Bounce houses create hours of fun and provide healthy exercise for children, provided the
inflatable is set up appropriately. There are certain rules for establishing a bounce house to
ensure the safety of those using it and to protect the integrity of the inflatable.
The Surface
A bounce house should only be set up on a flat, even surface. It should be free of sticks, stones,
rocks, and branches. The inflatable should also be set up away from irrigation sprinkler heads.
Aside from the danger of puncturing the bounce house, adults need to remember that children
exiting the bounce house may be wobbly and fall.
Weather Concerns
The weather can change rapidly in South Florida. Bounce houses should never be used when it’s
raining or a storm is on the horizon. Wind is another critical factor. Don’t use a bounce house if
the wind is strong enough to blow dust and/or small gravel around.
Other Hazards
Overhead branches are a definite danger and a bounce house should never be erected under
low hanging branches. It should be kept far from overhead utility lines, fences, sheds and other
types of hazards such as trampolines, swings and outdoor furniture on all sides.
Adult Supervision
It’s imperative that adult supervision is present at all times. It will be the responsibility of that
adult to ensure no more than 3 or 4 users are in the inflatable at one time. Youngsters should
all be of a similar build to mitigate the ripple effect that comes with jumping. Users should also
be similar in age – never mix young children with their older counterparts to maintain safety.
The adult will also be charged with having youngsters remove jewelry, glasses and empty their
pockets of any objects that could potentially puncture the bounce house. Users must remove
their shoes before entering and wear socks while in the inflatable.

Interactive Bounce Houses

The term interactive bounce house is somewhat of a misnomer – the entertainments are far
more than simple bounce houses typically associated with children. The amusements are
considered inflatables and the following are just some of the available options available for
private parties, corporate events, schools and fundraisers.

Obstacle Course
Inflatable obstacle courses offer a myriad of challenges. Individuals can choose options that
include rope and rock climbing challenges, along with warrior and military obstacle courses Fun
house and corn mazes, ninja walls and extreme challenges are available for competitive people
of all ages.

Warp Speed Arena
The group activity is great for teen and adult party-goers and offers a unique corporate team-
building experience. The interactive inflatable can be played 1-on-1 or 2 teams of 2 players. It
challenges coordination, strength, endurance and hand-eye coordination.

Mechanical Bull
Popularized in 1980 thanks to the movie Urban Cowboy, mechanical bulls remain popular and
few can resist trying to outride friends.

Velcro Climbing Wall
Fun for all ages, it doesn’t matter if someone takes a tumble – they land on a soft, inflatable
surface that gently breaks their fall.

Human Wrecking Ball
A 4-person experience, players stand on an inflatable pad while dodging the “wrecking ball”
swung by an opponent. It’s especially popular for high school, college and corporate events,
along with large private parties.

Sports Challenge
The inflatable is a 3-in-1 sports lovers dream, combining soccer, basketball and football under a
single roof. It can be used by 3 people at a time.

Games on the Go
The specially designed and equipped arcade on wheels features over 300 of the most popular
video game titles to play.

Wipe Out
Similar to the popular game show, individuals climb their ladder and try to get from one side of
the platform to the other using the large inflatable balls. The soft ball pit underneath catches
anyone that falls.

Waterslides
One of the most popular and frequently requested interactive is a waterslide. Models are
available in multiple heights, including exciting options that stand 40 ft. tall for a wild and
exhilarating ride. Waterslides are offered in single and multi-lane options. Water-based
entertainments are also offered for small children and toddlers.

Are Bounce Houses Safter Than Trampolines?

Parents are often in a quandary when planning entertainment for a children’s party. They want
youngsters to enjoy themselves while staying safe. Two of the most popular and frequently
requested amusements are a bounce house and trampoline. The next question becomes are
they safe and every parent must make their own decision.

Bounce House
Generally speaking, a bounce house is considered safer. A bounce house is supported entirely
by pressurized air and sets on the ground. Bounce houses are appropriate for youngsters age 6
to 12. Children younger than that don’t have the coordination or motor skills to keep
themselves upright.

The most common injuries reported from bounce house usage are fractures and muscle strains
to the arms, but primarily the legs. Head and neck injuries were next in prevalence. Boys were
more likely to be injured in a bounce house than girls, 53.9 percent compared to 46.1.
Over a 4-year period, more than 82,700 children were injured in a bounce house There have
also been about 30 bounce house-related deaths when a device was blown about by high winds
or was improperly anchored.

Trampoline
In comparison, a trampoline is supported by a metal frame and the jumping surface is elevated
above the ground. Children can be thrown off a trampoline onto the ground, into shrubbery, or
into nearby structures. A specially designed net or cage for a trampoline should always enclose
the equipment to prevent children from being throw off.

Children age 6 and under shouldn’t use a trampoline due to their lack of motor skills. Injuries
are due to colliding with another person, landing improperly, performing stunts, jumping or
falling off a trampoline, and falling on the device’s springs or framework.

Statistics show that the most often reported injuries were fractures – approximately 25.8
percent. Muscle strains came in second at 25.7 percent, and contusions accounted for 14.5
percent of injuries. An estimated 100,000 people are injured on trampolines each year, with
500 of those resulting in permanent neurological damage.

How to Make a Slip and Slide Slippery the Safe Way

A slip and slide is an easy way to keep children amused for hours. The entertainment can be
made at home with tarps or heavy plastic. The biggest problem will be ensuring that the surface
is slippery enough – water alone seldom works efficiently.
The key to any entertainment is ensuring safety. Be sure to set it up away from utility lines,
fences, structures, sprinkler heads and other items that can cause an injury if children slide into
them.
Plastic
A successful slip and slide begins with choosing the best plastic for the task. Visqueen is a good
choice as it’s highly durable. Select plastic that’s at least 6 mil.
Water Flow
Water is a critical element in a slip and slide and must flow from the top to the bottom. The
device must have a steady stream of liquid available at all times to avoid dry areas that can
result in friction burns. It can be helpful to place holes in an old hose and place it at points along
the way to ensure saturation of the plastic. There should be good drainage to avoid turning a
pristine lawn into a mud pit.
Extra Lubrication
A bottle of tearless baby shampoo will work wonders for ensuring a lubricated surface. Many
people use dishwashing liquid, but it’s never a good idea. The soap will get in youngsters’ eyes,
resulting in irritation and pain.
Some have found that rubbing household wax paper over the plastic makes for a slippery
surface. Other alternatives include olive oil, baby oil or vegetable oil. Just remember that oils
are difficult to remove from the skin without a shower. Try to locate an environmentally-
friendly lubricant.
Other Considerations
A responsible adult should always be available to ensure the safety of users. Don’t let another
slider take their turn until the person before them has cleared the plastic. Unsupervised slip and
slides can result in serious injuries if basic, common sense safety precautions aren’t observed.

Ways for Grandparents to Connect with Grandchildren

Sometimes the generation gap can seem insurmountable for grandparents, especially if their grandchildren are tweens or teens. It’s much easier to find activities to share with youngsters when they’re young, but a loving connection is essential at any age. Grandparents can have a profound influence on their grandchildren and for those that may not know where to begin, the following are some great ways to start.

One-on-One Time

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with spending the day or engaging in an activity with just one of your grandchildren at a time instead of doing something as a group. They each have different interests that you can share and nurture. Just do the same for each one.

Activities and Hobbies

It’s never too early for children to discover new interests. It could be anything from collecting seashells or knitting to biking and horseback riding. If a grandchild is already passionate about a sport or activity, watch TV or movies about it with them, or try it with them.

Be Silly, Have Fun

A sense of humor and the ability to laugh at oneself are some of the greatest gifts you can bestow upon your grandchildren. If you like to sing or dance, do it with wild abandon. Let them see your own sense of humor shine through and teach by example – don’t be afraid to try new things.

Be Practical

There are dozens of practical things with which you can help your grandchildren. Essential things you learned as a child are often not taught or learned anymore, but they still have practical applications. Being able to make change without electronic means, create a budget, cook a meal or change a tire are just some examples.

Be Yourself

There’s been way too much hype about being the “cool” grandma or grandpa. Children know when adults are faking. Grandchildren want to see the real you, know that they’re important to you, and that you love them. Spending time with them enables you to be a major part of their life, pass on some of your knowledge and experience, and learn new things from them.

Boston Red Sox

JetBlue Park in Fort Myers is the Red Sox spring-training stadium.  The stadium is just like a smaller version of the Red Sox’ very own Fenway Park and just a long fly ball away from the airport. Unlike beautiful Boston, we have the sunshine all year round, meaning that hardened Red Sox fans are always more than happy to travel south for their annual spring pilgrimage.

Minnesota Twins

Just 10 minutes down the road from the Twins regular home at Hammond Stadium, Fort Myers training ground is super easy to access for Twins fans from around the state and the country.  Miles and miles away from the madness of Orlando and Miami, ball fans can spend the day watching their team, then take in the stunning sites and secluded beaches of the Gulf Coast.

Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals have played their spring-training games in six Florida cities since 1914, and this year they will host 15 games at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium starting February 24, 2019. Situated deep within the Abacoa Community, your visit to Jupiter will be all about ballgames, beaches and beautiful weather.

Miami Marlins

Surrounded by vast natural areas and built around the mouth of the Loxahatchee River, Jupiter is the Marlins’ home-away-from-home about an hour and a half north of Miami.  Based at the Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, which they share with the Cardinals, they will be hosting a number of games starting from February 24, 2019.

First Data Field in Port St Lucie

New York Mets

As one of the biggest names in Baseball, it is no surprise that the Mets demand some of the very best training facilities in the country.  First Data Field is home to the New York Mets Spring Training, the St. Lucie Mets Minor League Team and all the New York Mets Minor League operations.  If you are lucky enough to score tickets to watch your favorite team train down here, you will also be just a couple of hours away from Orlando and minutes away from Hutchinson Island beaches and the PGA Village, giving you the perfect all-around Florida experience.
